Stakes action closed out the Sunday matinee harness racing program at Truro Raceway with three-year-old pacing colts headlining two $6,400 Nova Scotia Series Stakes splits and older pacing mares starring in two $3,362 divisions of the Erwin Andrew Memorial Pacing Series.  Pictonians Souwest, the 9-2 third choice in the other Nova Scotia Series Stakes split, fought off favourite Putnams Art (Bernard McCallum) for the 1:57.4 triumph in rein to Mike Stevenson. Putnams Art settled for second, one length behind, while J G S Sandy (Todd Trites) rounded out the top three. Wayne Bell trains and Daniel Ross of Belfast, P.E.I. owns the gelded son of Western Paradise-Southview Sasha, who is now three-for-seven in 2011. The victory was his 10th overall in 18 starts and lifted his bankroll over the $50,000 mark. Add Comment Driver Marc Campbell captured the first two $9,540 Atlantic Sires Stakes ‘A’ divisions with a pair of perfect two-year-old pacing fillies on Wednesday evening at Red Shores at Summerside Raceway. Campbell sent his own trainee Malabrigo to the top from third after the :30.4 opening quarter in the second ‘A’ split and led the rest of the way through panels of 1:01.3 and 1:31.4 en route to a 2:00.4 score by one and a quarter lengths.  Malabrigo, a 1:59.4 winner while debuting in Callbeck Stakes action, was purchased for $11,500 at the Nova Scotia Provincial Exhibition Sale by Greenoaks Farm of Mississauga, Ont. Pictonian Amanda rallied from last to first in the first $5,800 Callbeck filly event, halting the timer in 2:02 for driver Kenny Arsenault and trainer Wayne Bell. The Western Paradise-Southview Sasha miss was making her career debut for P.E.I. owners Daniel Ross and Bill Bell. Pictonians Souwest extended his winning streak to four-in-a-row thanks to his 1:59.3 triumph in the first division. Gary Chappell sliced out panels of :31, 1:00.4 and 1:30.2 with the Wade Sorrie student before tacking on a :29.1 final quarter en route to the 1:59.3 decision over DWs Jack and Woodmere Sandman. Sent off as the 1-5 favourite, the son of Western Paradise-Southview Sasha drew away to win by 4-1/4 lengths for owner Daniel Ross of Belfast, PE. After destroying the previously undefeated Putnam's Power at Northside Downs three weeks ago, Pictonian Souwest returned once again to slay the dragon, but this time the stakes were much higher. Driver Mike Stevenson sent Pictonian Souwest to the front in last weeks $25,000 Atlantic Breeders Crown final and the duo never looked back the entire mile. Owned by Daniel Ross from Belfast, Prince Edward Island the gelding cruised past the opening panel in 28.4. With the backfield afraid of the striking son of Western Paradise, he was unchallenged past a comfortable half in 59.0 and as he went by three quarters of a mile in an even more leisure 1:29.4 Stevenson told him it was now time to go. And did he ever GO! The homebred of Pictonian Farms paced a sizzling final quarter in 28.3 and sprinted away from his competition by more than six lengths. Tiger Williams finished second and Putnams Power, the heavy favourite, was a disappointing third.  Albeit he finished the strongest in the Maritime Breeders final at the end of May and has been raking in the dough left right and center, T M Top Gun has been quietly flying under the publics radar - or at least until today in Saint John. The three year old son of Western Paradise turned away all challengers, including Island Redemption who had been riding a six race win streak, while blazing his way to a new lifetime record of 1:57.2 in the final Atlantic Sires Stake event in Saint John earlier today. The colt sat behind Island Redemption who carved the front-end fractions and popped the pocket in the lane to win by three quarters of a length, closing the mile out with a 29.2 final quarter. T M Top Gun is now owned by David MacDonald of Halifax, Nova Scotia. Darren Crowe does the duties of training and driving for the colt. The pacer, who nows owns a 2-6-2 record in his first 14 starts of the season, has banked more that $38,000 in his career.  The best of the best in Atlantic Canada did battle in the biggest week of racing in Canada, Old Home Week, and many Pictonian named horses were front and center of all the celebrations. Probably one of the best two year old colts to hit the stakes circuit this year is Pictonian Souwest. The son of Western Paradise left for the front on August 18th and paced his first quarter in a sensational 27.4 (fastest quarter, at any point during a mile, paced by any two year old in the Maritimes) and he had plenty left in the tank afterwards to kick home in 29.1. The colt was untouched or challenged for an easy gate-to-wire win in 1:58.4 under the command of driver/trainer Mike Stevenson. She was a force to be reckoned with in Atlantic Canada while in stakes races, but she's now moved on to setting her own 'legacy' and records south of the border at The Meadowlands. Semjac Legacy was a winner at The Meadowlands on Friday night won in 1:50.1. Now four years old, Pictonian Maestro was a winner recently at Rideau Carleton Racetrack in Ottawa, Ontario. The son of Western Paradise was an easy winner in 1:58.3 with an easy gate-to-wire win. The striking horse is now owned and trained by Sean Sullivan of Casselman, Ontario and was driven by maritimer (Sir) John MacDonald, son of Nova Scotia horseman Cyril (Toby) MacDonald who races horses from Truro Raceway. You can view the charted lines by clicking here All eyes were on Sportswriter last night at Mohawk, but it was Kid Carson who ended up getting the glory. The son of Western Paradise closed strong in the end, pacing a closing quarter in 26.3 and coming from 7th at the top of the turn to beat World Record holder Sportswriter and millionaire Nebupanezar in 1:50.2. Kid Carson recently changed hands from the Casie Coleman (she's the trainer of Sportswriter) Stable to Steph Chartrand of Hampton, Ontario.
